An adventure holiday specialist may seem like an unlikely company to profile on a green tourism site, but there is more to Intrepid Travel than meets the eye. Intrepid Travel is a UK based travel company that are committed to offering holidays that fit in with a travel responsibly policy.
This policy has been set up to manage how the trips are run, and what they give back to the places travellers visit, and the environment. They carry out this policy through 3 main activities: The Intrepid Foundation was set up to give funds to aid development and conservation projects in the places Intrepid run trips to. There’s also a carbon offset fee included in the price of each holiday. This fee is distributed to projects that work to reduce carbon emissions, such as renewable energy projects. Lastly, Intrepid Travel is also an advocate of sustainable tourism. The company runs trips in small groups, which give travellers first hand experiences of new and different cultures, and they also educate local communities along the way in sustainable tourism practices. It’s not just about educating local communities though; it’s giving something back, so intrepid support local transport, restaurants and accommodation wherever possible.
That is the science bit, now on to the actual holidays: The Intrepid Travel website details trips available in all 8 different areas across the world, so you can search through available breaks in Antarctica, Africa, Asia, Australia Pacific, Europe, Latin America, Middle East, and lastly North America. Each trip is categorised by style and theme. There are basic trips with budget accommodation which have shared facilities, while original style trips offer tourist class accommodation and private facilities, and there’s also a comfort trip. Themes include festivals and events, photography, wildlife and urban adventures.
The question is, what kind of traveller are you? Would you like to spend 10 days on the Antarctic Peninsula searching out Whales and Penguins, or would you prefer to take the Tuscan Express, and explore Luca, Siena and Florence in Italy. Perhaps 15 days on an American National Park tour will be more your kind of holiday. Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks, The Grand Canyon, and a cheeky stop off in Las Vegas await.
There are a wide variety of trips on offer throughout the year, and with special offers and day tours becoming available at various times, there’s sure to be something to suit your adventurous spirit.
Hello…I am looking for an opportunity to volunteer , especially interested in assisting in the tracking and recording/research of humpback whales..I am a retired lady 62 and have travelled a lot in the world frequently as crew on sailing boats and dont get sea sick. My original degree was in biological sciences with a studies in marine biology. I had the pleasure of sailing with these whales in Vava’ Tonga in 2002. I would be interested in projects taking place in any part of the world and I am flexible to travel. thank you Susan
